How REAL Drum Practice Sounds (1.5 hours of suck)

How REAL Drum Practice Sounds (1.5 hours of suck) -- The problem with the internet, our favorite albums, live music? WE NEVER SEE THE PROCESS!!! Want to see more HORRIBLENESS happening in real time? Check out my bass drum practice here: https://youtu.be/ucd9fDxHpNQ We just see the end result...which is oftentimes jaw dropping. I know there have been many times I've watched my favorite artist and just thought "I don't sound like that when I practice". Good news...you're NOT SUPPOSED to sound good when you practice. The purpose of practice is to isolate problems areas or new material (that you can't play) and then work on it. Or, if you have learned something to a certain level of proficiency, "break it" until you can't play it again and dive back in. The moment you start sounding really good in practice is the moment you stop practicing and you start reviewing. Or jamming. And there's nothing wrong with jamming or reviewing material you can play well. That's the point of practice. But what IS a problem is calling that practice. All too often I see "practice" videos posted online that are not practice at all...they are jamming videos. They are the end result of the practice session. And that's awesome. It's great to relish in what you accomplish. I'm all for it. But please don't call it practice. It leaves others feeling like their own practice time should sound like that. If you sound good in your practice time, you are not practicing. Period. Find something, break it, and work on it. It is a constant process of breaking, fixing, breaking, fixing, breaking, fixing. Forever. Disclaimer: What sounds bad to one ear sounds good to another. There was a time when the warm up I play in this video was my ENTIRE practice time. Because I couldn't play it. You may have a pattern that is sounding pretty good, but that you're wanting to really put the shine on. Bring out the accents. Make it sit in the pocket better, etc. It all has to do with a specific goal that you have. But on some level, the exercise must have a certain amount of suck to it. Once you find the area that sounds bad, work it to death.
